In late 2009, working as a creative director for a large financial company’s in-house marketing team, I made the bold decision to give my 2 weeks notice and set out on my own as an independent contractor graphic designer. With only a few small clients and a few thousand dollars in the bank and while having just bought my first home, I courageously (and irresponsibly) rolled the dice and ventured out on my own. In hopes of succeeding at freelance design and following in my late father’s footsteps as an independent commercial artist, I founded 1Brand Design and worked tirelessly to build my brand and promote 1Brand through organic search and old-fashioned cold calls.
After months of sleepless nights and with a little bit of sheer luck, I landed my first large, steady client which allowed me to continue work independently and focus on slowly landing more clients. 12 years later, 1Brand Design has managed to build a strong, loyal client base and has been commissioned by some of the largest brands in Chicago for design, web development and digital marketing.
What makes me the most proud of celebrating 12+ years as a design company, is how 1Brand’s growth has been based almost entirely on word-of-mouth and referrals from clients that loved working with us. Our ability to satisfy, impress and drive results for even some of the most competitive industries are the reasons we’ve lasted 12 years and have maintained a growing client base of great companies.
Personally, my lifelong passion for design and learning new technologies is what keeps me going each day and receiving praise and accolades from our clients after finalizing a tough project, fills me with a sense of pride and satisfaction that helps revitalize my drive and passion for commercial art and design. Having loyal clients that can recognize and appreciate our quality of work, dedication and customer service makes it all worth the while.
